New exhibition focuses on buildings and solutions to homelessness

We partnered with Earl Kendrick to help 12 MYLONDON participants photograph a building that has meaning to them, related to their life in a ground-breaking new multimedia exhibition opening next week in the Building Centre, Store Street, London.

The exhibition, which features videos of the photographers speaking about not only the building they photographed, but their opinions on homelessness and how they believe it can be resolved, will be projected onto walls surrounding the 12 enlarged photos taken by the photographers.

We see this project as a new way to connect with a segment of the London population - companies in the building trade. By speaking to people who are homeless or recently homeless about the key issues from their perspective we hope it will open a dialogue about how the wider community can address the issues.

Earl Kendrik approached us with this idea and have been generous in their support: they have covered costs involved with producing and hosting the exhibition, including payment of prize money to all the 12 photographers.

Photographers used a Fujifilm QuickSnap camera or a digital camera. Every participant had one of the photos taken enlarged for the exhibition, but several other photos taken by them will be projected onto the walls of the Building Centre exhibition space.

Following consultation with the photographers it was agreed that they would take photos of a building that had meaning to them. This could be a place where they felt safe, whether a former home or where someone or organisation had helped them in the past, or it could be a building that inspires them. MYWORLD volunteers met the photographers at the locations of the buildings they want to photograph in early September.

All photographers who were participants in this year's MYLONDON project were asked if they would like to do this extra project and 12 people have said they would. The project is seen to be an extension to the MYLONDON project - a way to speak more about the issue of homelessness, rather than just focusing on photography. Rather than attractive photos taken for a calendar they show beauty in a different way - from the rough back streets of Tottenham to inspiring churches and palaces in the centre of London or in Kensington Gardens.
